4 Reasons Why New Gutters Should Be Left to Professionals

With the advent of online tutorial videos, many homeowners are taking the DIY route for home tasks. While many of those DIY tasks can be done with great results, some are best left to professionals. In today’s post, local gutter and roofing contractor Pawcatuck Roofing Company Inc. takes a look at the reasons why gutter design and installation is best left to gutter professionals.

1. Build Quality – There are some individuals that have designed and built their own gutters with admirable precision. However, it doesn’t mean that every single DIYer will get the same results. Certain aspects of gutter design and installation, including pitch, placement and hanger spacing, need to be done precisely to ensure the system’s long-term performance. For example, gutters hung at the wrong pitch can result in standing water that can then lead to corrosion and recurring leaks.

2. Safety – Individuals who haven’t had safety training and/or do not use proper safety gear are more likely to suffer an injury from an accidental fall. Professional gutter installers, on the other hand, are trained, certified and equipped for such events. Professionals also have workers’ compensation, which provides insurance coverage in case of accidents.

3. More Options – There are not as many options available to DIYers compared to those offered by gutter professionals. Gutters are usually available as 10-foot lengths of galvanized steel. Finding gutters made of copper or aluminum can be difficult, and they may need to be ordered in advance and/or in bulk. In contrast, you get a wider selection of materials, profiles and sizes from gutter professionals. Because seamless gutters require specialized equipment to build them, they are only available from gutter professionals.

4. Warranties – The warranties that come with professionally installed gutters will always be far more extensive than warranties on the ones you build yourself. It’s not just the gutter materials – professionally made gutters come with workmanship warranties. In the event that the gutters fail because they are improperly built or hung, correcting the problem wouldn’t cost you anything. Correcting the same problem on DIY gutters means you’ll have to cover the costs out of your own pocket.
