A Typical Residential Roof Installation Timeline

You’re probably not going to install your own roof. Nevertheless, knowing the process end-to-end can help you manage your project and recognize signs of potential delays. In today’s post, local roofing contractor Pawcatuck Roofing Company. shares an overview of a typical roof replacement timeline.

Planning Stage

Once you have decided on getting a new roof, you’ll be spending time on comparing roofing materials, styles and other roofing options. This will be followed by weeks contacting roofing contractors, comparing quotes, and, later, securing financing for your project.

Before Installation

Signing the contract is usually followed by a one or two-week period, during which your contractor will secure permits, order materials, and deliver them to your home. Prior to installation day, you can use this time to prepare your home by covering furniture and appliances with dust covers. You will also need to clear space in your yard. Roofing contractors typically deliver roofing materials ahead of installation day.

Installation

The first day of roof replacement will begin with preparations, which usually takes about an hour or two. Work areas will be prepared to prevent damage to parts of your home. Landscaping will be covered with tarpaulin, while paths will be covered with boards. The old roof will then be stripped down to the decking. Discarded materials will be collected in dumpsters provided by your roofing contractor. Removal may take up the entire first day on large roofs.

The roof deck will be inspected for hidden structural issues such as moisture damage, with repairs being performed as needed. The rest of the roof will then be installed, starting with underlayment. Depending on the complexity of your chosen roofing system, the rest of the installation process may last from a few days to as long as two weeks. The finished roof will undergo a quality inspection conducted by the roofing contractor or a representative from the roofing manufacturer.

After Installation

The work areas will be cleaned up thoroughly after the new roof is completed. The yard will be swept with large magnets to remove stray nails, while high-powered vacuum cleaners will be used for removing dust and debris. Depending on your agreement with your contractor, they or a local recycler will collect the dumpsters with the old roofing. A representative from your contractor will follow-up after a few days to collect the final payment, complete your warranty registration and answer further questions that you may have.
