Repairs or a Replacement: Which One Does Your Roof Need?

You might have noticed that quite a few shingle granules have fallen onto your lawn or driveway. Does this mean your roof needs to be replaced? Not necessarily. Pawcatuck Roofing Co., a top roofing contractor in the state, elaborates further below.

Granule Loss

It’s natural for asphalt shingles to lose a few granules. That’s why manufacturers usually add 40% more granules.

As a rule of thumb, the older your roof gets, the more granules it’ll shed. Eventually, the granule loss will result in bald patches on your roof. These bald patches are a sign you need a roof replacement

Keep in mind that these patches are normal for an aging roof, but not a newly installed one. Severe granule loss on a newly installed roof is a symptom of an underlying problem. If your roof is shedding an abnormally large amount of granules, call a contractor right away.

Blisters

Apart from granule loss, other signs can tell you when your roof needs repairs. One of them is blisters, or small bumps on your roof. Inadequate attic ventilation and installation errors are the usual culprits behind these.

Roof blisters will normally be harmless. However, there’s a risk that they’ll burst, creating an entry point for moisture to infiltrate the underlayers. Just to be on the safe side, have a contractor inspect them.

Cracks in the Shingle’s Fiberglass Mat

Minor surface-level cracks aren’t a cause for concern. Cracks that extend to the shingle’s fiberglass base, on the other hand, are a worrying sign that should be addressed immediately. In most cases, you’ll have to replace cracked shingles.

Just make sure to hire an experienced contractor. This way, your roof will be inspected comprehensively and your shingles replaced properly.
