Single-Ply Roofing: A Quick Comparison of TPO and EPDM

While single-ply roofing is more commonly used in commercial buildings, this type of roof system has gained a following among residential clients as well — thanks to the numerous benefits they can offer. Two of the most popular single-ply roofing membranes are TPO (Thermoplastic Polyolefin) and EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer). To help you decide the best option for you, roof replacement expert Pawcatuck Roofing Co. compares TPO and EPDM based on the following aspects:

Durability

TPO and EPDM are both highly durable materials, and there’s no question about that. TPO is known for its seam strength, which is three to four times better than EPDM’s adhesive and tape seams. However, EPDM still has excellent resistance against ozone, UV light and severe weather events.

Installation

TPO is usually installed with hot air welding. This can be a complicated process, so you have to ensure that your roofing contractor is skilled and experienced with this type of single-ply roofing membrane. EPDM, on the other hand, does not require specialized skills or equipment, so this is generally the obvious choice for customers who prefer quick and easy installation.

Energy Efficiency

TPO is basically a “cool roof”, and it can effectively keep a cooler thermal balance inside your home or building. Furthermore, this means that you can ease up your reliance on air conditioning and potentially reduce energy costs. EPDM can also contribute to your property’s energy efficiency since it has noteworthy reflective properties. However, it may not be able to provide as much savings as TPO.

Maintenance

TPO generally requires a higher level of maintenance than EPDM. Much like the installation process for TPO, its maintenance may involve some special procedure as well. With EPDM, though, you have to be careful of the seams. Its seams are treated only with adhesive, so they may come apart and require servicing after some time.
