Understanding French Drains

It is almost impossible to get rid of a permanent damp spot. However, experts note there is still a simple solution to dry things up quickly— a French drain. Today, your trusted roofing contractor shares more information about it.

A French drain is a gravel-lined ditch typically built with an embedded pipe, carrying water away from the home. Its function can be likened to gutters, which collect rainwater as it runs off the roof. However, this one manages the water runoff at ground level. It’s typically valuable for situations wherein water pools in lower or depressed spots in your yard.

Moreover, this specific drain can also be used to prevent “wet” basements, which usually occur when water seeps through the foundation and leaks through. It is designed to reroute water near the foundation to dry it and avoid compromising the structure.

Things to Remember

When installing a French drain, roofing replacement experts note that you can choose to consult with your contractor regarding your gutters, downspouts and drainage. Ensure that these are in good condition and these components and the French drain won’t interfere with one another.

  • Basement water. If water is getting into your basement, you should install a deep French drain. It should run around the perimeter of your home at the footing level.
    Cost: $12,000 for a 1,500-square-foot basement 6 feet deep.
  • Retaining wall on a hillside. If you’re constructing a retaining wall on a hillside, the French drain should be added behind the first course of stones or blocks.

Cost: About $3,000.

  • Surface water. Your French drain should be shallow and be installed horizontally across your property and directly uphill of the area you want to dry out if you’re dealing with surface water.
Cost: $10 to $16 per linear foot.
