6 Ways to Keep Your Siding in Great Shape

Your new vinyl siding is quite a valuable investment and designed to last for a long time, so it’s a must to maintain its beauty and keep it in excellent condition. Constant exposure to the elements can cut its lifespan short.

Trusted leading roofing contractor Pawcatuck Roofing Co., Inc shares six tips on siding maintenance to help you out.

1. Keep It Clean

One deep cleaning a year is all it takes. If you forget to schedule a cleaning, things like dirt, mildew and mold can build up and downgrade your home’s curb appeal

2. Avoid Pressure Washers

Some manufacturers give conflicting advice on whether it’s safe to use pressure washers to clean certain types of siding. But in general, it’s best to avoid them, as they can damage parts of your exterior if the pressure setting is set too high.

3. Use a Mild Cleaning Solution to Wash Your Siding

It’s best to use a mild cleaning solution to clean your siding. Check the manufacturer’s manual first. Manufacturers usually list chemicals that can damage your siding in the manual and provide specific instructions for cleaning their siding products.

4. Apply a Fresh Coat of Paint

A fresh coat of paint will help protect your siding from the elements and freshen your exterior. Roofing repair contractors recommend repainting your siding every 5 to 10 years, although this may vary depending on the type of siding installed and the climate in your area. You also need to use specific types of paint for certain kinds of siding.

5. Inspect Your Siding

Your siding is bound to get damaged by mother nature at least once or twice during its lifespan. That is why it’s important to check your siding for any chipped paint, caulking or moisture. If you happen to find any damage, leave the repairs and replacement to a professional.

6. Trim Those Trees

Branches can scrape on the siding’s surface during a windy day, plus leaves and even creatures crawling on the branch could end up on your siding. Make sure you have any nearby branches trimmed down regularly.
